Leadership through Action: Establishing the Bob White Disability Management Leadership Scholarship

Bob White was the Honourary Labour Co-Chair of the National Institute of Disability Management and Research (NIDMAR). He used his personal commitment and institutional influence to promote improved return to work, the primary focus being on the promotion of education, professionalization, and program standards, which international research has proven is the most effective way of restoring and maintaining workers’ abilities, while reducing the costs of disability for workers, employers, government, and insurance.

As part of his commitment towards better return to work outcomes for injured and disabled workers, Bob also recognized the imperative needs which persons with disabilities generally face and applied his tremendous resource of personal skills and abilities in trying to change this narrative.

Through NIDMAR’s sponsorship, Pacific Coast University for Workplace Health Sciences was established in July 2007 through a legislative statute and the unanimous support of all Members of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, Canada.

Its mandate is the development and delivery of innovative, relevant and leading edge education, supported through evidence-based research, in all aspects of workplace health, including Occupational Health & Safety, Disability Management, Rehabilitation and Disability Studies.

“Unifor’s $100,000 donation to Pacific Coast University for Workplace Health Sciences will help prepare students to support workers staying at or returning to work after injury or disability. The Scholarship named after Bob White recognizes the vision to create safer and more inclusive workplaces.” – Sari Sairanen, Executive Assistant to the Secretary Treasurer of UNIFOR and Labour Co-Chair of PCU-WHS’s Board of Governors
